Christmas Lecture for 2024 – 7pm on 11th December

Dear Cambrians

We are delighted to announce our 2024 Cambrian Christmas Lecture, which will take place online (Zoom) on Wednesday 11 December at 7 pm, and will be given by Michael Freeman.

Michael will be talking about ‘Welsh costume’, as worn by women in Wales from the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries. It developed from a style worn mostly by rural working women. It was described and illustrated by many tourists, who played a part in classifying it as a traditional costume. As it became less common from the 1850s it was taken up by middle- and upper-class women who wore it as a ‘National Costume’ at major events. The talk will look at the limitations of the evidence; briefly describe each element of the costume, from hat down to stockings; and provide a survey of its development over two centuries.

We look forward to seeing you then. Zoom joining details will be sent out closer to the date of the event.

Kind regards

Andrew Davidson
