Cambrian and RCAHMW Christmas Lecture 2022
Wallpaintings are an ephemeral but unexpectedly resilient and revealing form of decoration. This talk explores some of the themes in the Royal Commission’s recent book, Painted Temples: Wallpaintings and Rood-screens in Welsh Churches, 1200–1800. The talk offers an overview of painted decoration in Welsh churches, charting some profound visual changes that occurred before and after the Reformation. Wallpaintings can still surprise, instruct, and entertain – as the many images used in this lecture will show.
