An attractive and informative new booklet celebrates 175 years of the Cambrian Archaeological Association, charting the development of archaeological illustration and recording through the ages.

The new booklet Illustrating the Past in Wales is a celebration of the history and archaeology of Wales, the Marches and the wider world as seen through illustrations published in the journal Archaeologia Cambrensis over 175 years. It was launched at a special weekend conference in Llangollen on 23rd October 2021.

A series of themed essays over 80 pages take the reader chronologically through several millennia of history, archaeology, biography and technique to the present day, revisiting famous archaeological discoveries, pioneering personalities and techniques, classic excavations and iconic buildings and monuments.

In compiling this booklet the authors have selected the finest examples of historical illustration including antiquarian sketches, early engravings and surveys, maps, surveys, paintings, aerial photographs and reconstructions, many of which are reproduced here for the first time in decades for future generations to enjoy.
